The history of "Conté à Paris"

cont--paris-depuis-1795-85462637The history of “Conté à Paris” products cannot be separated from the personality of the company's founder, Nicolas Jacques Conté. Born in 1755, he claimed the title of painter, chemist, physicist, hot air balloonist and inventor during the fifty years he lived. Nicolas Jacques Conté's historical achievement is undeniable. In 1794, he developed the modern graphite lead from a mixture of clay and graphite, thus making it finally possible to create different grades of hardness for pencils. The pencil factory he set up in 1794 enabled France to at last produce its own calligraphy and drawing material. A few years later, he developed “pencils without sleeves” (bare leads) replacing those made from “Italian stone”. He worked on making the colours “fixed and unchangeable” to meet the requirements of the painters of the day. Artists' pencils and pastels were thus born. Over the decades, the quality of its products and the extent of its ranges have enabled Conté à Paris to establish itself as a true reference for artists world-wide. Used by top masters, amateur artists and art students alike, Conté à Paris offers the widest variety of techniques and effects possible for drawing, sketching and pastel work.

Bruynzeel-HollandHistory of bruynzeel-sakura
1897: Establishment of Bruynzeel (Holding Company)
1948: Establishment of Bruynzeel Potlodenfabriek bv (Bruynzeel Pencil Factory Ltd)
30 December 1947: the Bruynzeel pencil factory was established. A difficult period so soon after World War ll. There was a great shortage of writing materials. Prior to the war, approximately 30 to 40 million wooden pencils were imported into the Netherlands annually from Germany, Czechoslovakia and Switzerland. The Dutch government believed that in order to boost the economy,
it would be beneficial if a Dutch company were to manufacture pencils. The Bruynzeel holding company possessed knowledge and expertise: Bruynzeel Potloden became a fact.
1989: Opening of Premises on the Potlodenlaan (Pencil Lane)
The industrial designer, Piet Zwart played an important role in the development of Bruynzeel pencils. He lived from 1885 to 1977 and right from the start of Bruynzeel Potlodenfabriek, he was involved in the design and construction of the packaging of pencils. After the liquidation of the Holding Company, the pencil factory continued as an independent organisation in 1982. On 22 September 1988, the first pile was driven into the ground on a new industrial site in the Meilust district, the access road was named Potlodenlaan. All the business activities were moved to these new premises in November 1989.
1997:Bruynzeel and Sakura are stronger together
The Bruynzeel pencil factory joined the Japanese Sakura Group in 1997. Sakura Color Products is particularly strong in writing utensils and colouring materials and Bruynzeel pencils and felt-tip pens are the perfect supplement to this range of products. Since 1991, Koninklijke Talens in Apeldoorn (artist’s products and oil paints) has also become part of the Sakura Group.
2000: Integration of Bruynzeel Potlodenfabriek bv and Sakura Europe Ltd: bruynzeel-sakura
With effect from 1 October 2000, Sakura Europe and Bruynzeel Pencil Factory joined forces to become bruynzeel-sakura, an inspiring organisation with inspiring products, “the best of both worlds”, top quality products from both the Bruynzeel and the Sakura range. THE COMIC ART OF GUILLERMO FORCHINO
From the early 1980’s, Guillermo Forchino experiments with various materials to create his works of art.
This research began in the city of his birth Rosario Argentina at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts and then continued during three years of studies in art restoration and conservation at the Sorbonne University in Paris, France. During his studies he discovered and mastered many classic techniques and materials.
After completing his studies in Paris, Guillermo returned to Argentina where he directed the Juan B. Castagnino atelier of art restoration for the Museum of Beaux-Arts in Rosario.
It was during this period that Forchino began creating figures made from wrapped bands of cloth where the visible parts of the body (head and hands) were made from wax and paper maché colored with natural pigments.
From the end of the 1980’s, Forchino chose polyresins to create figurines and scenes that often resemble the world of comic strip and cartoon characters. These are typically unusual and humorous subjects such as a family leaving on vacation in an overloaded car with flat tires, or a tired old American pick-up truck from the 1950’s with equally tired passengers.
Mr. Forchino has also chosen to create other modes of transportation such as boats, planes and motorcycles and has even used a floating bathtub in his works. His creations are always full of humor and finesse and are created with a unique character.
In recent years, Guillermo has also created a line of individuals in sports and a variety of professions that was named the “ Professionals Series”. Also these creations have found a large collector audience worldwide. The average height of these figurines is 45 cm. Recently a smaller version of the Professionals was introduced the ” Special editions Series” , approx. 50% smaller .
Guillermo has regular expositions in France, in Argentina and in the Netherlands.
Mr. Forchino lives and works in Paris, his workshop is only a few steps away from the world famous Père Lachaise cemetery.
In 2003 a collaboration between Guillermo and VMM resulted in the worldwide introduction of replicas of Guillermo’s work.
These reproductions are fully handmade and hand painted, just like the originals, under the supervision of Guillermo himself, by highly skilled artisans in the Far East.
Some of these artworks are reproduced in the same size as the original that Mr. Forchino created, some are reduced in size to 50 or 75% of the original.
Through these initiatives, the Comic Art of Guillermo Forchino is available for a large group of art lovers in the form of limited editions, in numbered series. Found only in specially selected stores, each piece is identified by a stamped signature and a unique number on the bottom of the item. A numbered certificate of authenticity completes each package.
